The Clash – all
(1976 – 1985)
I went to see the Clash billed as “The only band that matters” in SF like 1978. Pretty much freaked me out on punk rock and also showed me you don’t need to be a 3 chord band screaming over and over. It also showed me the importance of political messages in music.
The Jam – Setting Sons
(Polydor, 1979)
I liked the groove the Jam had. Once again, they were not really a so-called “punk band”, but came out in the time of the “English wave” of punk. Great musicians writing great songs.
The Damned-”Neat neat neat“
(Frontier, 1977)
So much energy and passion it had to rub-off on you!

Killing Joke – Fire Dances, Extremities and their best to date: Killing Joke (with Dave Grohl)
(EG, 1983. Futurist, 1990. Zuma, 2003)
Unbelievable guitar tones and emotion
Augustus Pablo – King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown
(Shanachie, 1976)
Unreal bass, drums and melodica. I go to sleep almost every night listening to this amazing dub artist.
Bad Brains – I Against I
(SST, 1986)
Has to be one of my all-time favorites. Blending hard rock/punk/metal/reggae? How could you go wrong. Furious band live back-in-the-day.
Ramones – Rocket To Russia
(Sire, 1977)
Inspirational, fun, energy. I snuck out of school in my freshman year and snuck on a train to see them play for free outdoors in 1977. Really hot day with leather jackets on -”One two three four!” Can’t go wrong there. Made me want to be in a band.
Sevendust – Seasons
(TVT, 2003)
Every song is amazing. My current favorite band. Has both the crunchy-hardness and melody. A great mix.
.
Bob Marley
(1945 – 1981)
Every song was a hit to me.
.
The Buzzcocks – A Different Kind of Tension
(Nettwerk, 1979)
Unbelievable energy!
