Germs – (GI)
(Slash, 1979)
Still a sinister recording.Encoded in the music of this record is a fever dream of 70s CA
suburban glam-ennui and half truths…a book, a poem, an epic, a painting? Just too much going on here for one manimal to take. The lyric sheet !!
Rik L Rik – Meat House (7”)
(Posh Boy Services, 1979)
greaaaat voice , great presence, great chords…”Atomic Lawn“, another track not on this single should be on it.
The Fall – Dragnet
(Get Back Records, 1979)
Music that sounds like how I hear songs in my head !
.
The Fall – Slates
(Castle Music, 1981)
“Slates, Slags, etc.”, etc. Great riffs over and over and over
.
The Fall – Shift-work
(Universal, 1991)
“The Mixer” and “Rose” are two of my favorite songs to drive vast distances to.
.
Television Personalities – The Painted Word
(Fire Records, 1984)
This was the record that showed me I could do it too! “Say You won’t cry” kicks in the shattered dim door into summer exposing a whole new dream world. A stack of ace tracks this.
Nikki Sudden – Texas
(Creation, 1986)
This record taught me how to strum. The repetitions on this are almost just as good as those on Slates. Epic soundtracks on drums and piano and whatever else rounds it out perfectly. Now I feel I should list “Before Hollywood” but I’m going to wait.
Nikki Sudden and Rowland S. Howard – Kiss you Kidnapped Charabanc
(Secretely Canadian, 2002)
My favorite blues album.
.
Beat Happening
Did for me what the Cramps did for others.
.
.
Beach Boys – Today!
(Capitol, 1965)
“Pet Sounds” was the only record I listened to consistently from 85-90. Then I found this one… primarily because I love the track “Please let Me Wonder” which was originally featured here. Also, “I’m so young“, “Kiss me, Baby“, “She knows Me too well” are all fantastic and all on the same side as PLMW.
these are, at a glance, an important roster of recordings for me and ones that I’ll always have with me.I want to include the Birthday Party, The Go Betweens, the Scientists, Zombies, Seeds, Beatles, Stooges, Bacharach and a pretty extensive list but…who cares.
